The Guild Presidents Leadership Academy (GPLA) is a prestigious leadership development program tailored for outgoing Guild Presidents from Higher Institutions of Learning in Uganda. GPLA aims to equip these young leaders with the necessary knowledge, skills, and networks to effectively engage in national politics and contribute to the democratic consolidation and strengthening of Uganda.

Program Components:

Selection Process

  • Outgoing Guild Presidents from universities across Uganda will be invited to apply for the GPLA program.
  • Selection will be based on demonstrated leadership potential, commitment to public service, and interest in political engagement.
  • Efforts will be made to ensure gender equality and equity in the selection process, with a focus on encouraging young female leaders.

Training Sessions

  • The program will consist of intensive training sessions covering various aspects of political leadership, governance, public policy, and grassroots organizing.
  • Sessions will be led by esteemed speakers and facilitators, including experienced politicians, policy experts, and community organizers.
  • Topics covered will include negotiation, team building, analytical thinking, public speaking, policy advocacy, political campaigning, and community organizing.

Networking Opportunities

  • Participants will have the opportunity to network with like-minded peers, established leaders, and experts in the field.
  • Networking events, forums, and workshops will facilitate the exchange of ideas, best practices, and collaborations among participants.

Practicum and Internship

  • Participants will engage in quarterly civic engagement events in their respective constituencies, including hosting policy debates and town hall meetings.
  • Additionally, participants will undergo mentorship and internship placements in strategic national institutions to gain hands-on experience and enhance their capacity in leadership and governance.

Professional Development Training

  • Monthly professional development training sessions will be conducted to enhance participants' skills in planning, organizing, and implementing political campaign events.
  • These sessions will also focus on strengthening leadership, management, communication, and networking skills essential for effective political leadership.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased interest and participation of young leaders in elective political positions locally and nationally.
  • Strengthened leadership skills and competencies among Guild Presidents, enabling them to play active roles in governance and policymaking.
  • Enhanced civic engagement and grassroots organizing capabilities, leading to more informed and empowered communities.
  • Establishment of a vibrant network of young leaders committed to democratic principles, good governance, and social justice.
  • Greater representation and influence of youth voices in political decision-making processes at all levels.

Duration

Each cohort of the GPLA program will span a duration of 6 months, allowing participants to fully engage in the training, networking, and practical experiences offered by the program.
